Andrea Brown commented on a photo in MAE SOT TO KAWKAREIK

We saw these too, the road was littered with dead vehicles.

Yeh I did see that Andrea and your comments here now explain things a bit. I was able to stay at Honey Guest House after he phoned (the police I presume). He did tell me not to go outside after dark. Loved your comments on the road - deplorable. Also liked your comments on the tree lined hwys near the cities - they were beautiful.

No, you're not wimps - you are very adventurous and inspiring. This is a tough day and I know many who tried but didn't complete this stretch.

Andrea Brown commented on TAK TO MAE SOT

As you may have seen in our journal we too were thwarted in Kawkareik and ended up taking a truck to Myawaddy. Apparently the two hotels are open again, our Burmese friend says there had been bombings near there and some police had been killed. Naturally at the time we had no way of knowing that, which is pretty much par for Burma, you never really know what is going on.

We weren't up to this stretch, took a bus to Tak because we're wimps.

We stayed in #5, a twin to this one. Nice place.

Thanks Mike - yeh went with the Sapim DB spokes - little bit extra but same as the rims, money well spent. I pump my Marathon plus tyres up to 70 which is the tyre spec - not too much is it?

Good strong spokes too!

G'day Andrew
We have Ryde Andra 26" rims on our Thorn tandem and they are going well
Over inflation may cause a rim to split so keep tyre pressures reasonable, it gives a more comfortable ride anyway!

yeh it's great for sure but IMHO not at the same level as the Khao Soi I had in Chiang Rai (not many are) - but of course that's not as readily available all over.
Advantage in Vietnam is that we can read the signs of what the street food is. Outside of the tourist areas in Thailand it's all squiggly lines but the plus with that is it makes us learn how to pronounce some of the dishes.

It certainly wasn't as bad the year before at the same time. As I said though - was told this is because more farmers planted corn.

Mate, I didn't even know that was a crematorium.
The home page picture in your Vietnam journal up in the karst mountains - where was that actually taken?

It's really too bad they burn everything all winter. Every winter it seems to be a bit worse. If they don't wise up soon they are going to start losing a lot of tourists.

I could eat this dish every day in Thailand. It's the perfect cycling food too. Yes, I know what you mean about the food in Vietnam being great also and yes, I think I also like Thai food just slightly more. Maybe it's because I am more familiar with Thai food.
