It's fun to know that someone else had a Xixim adventure! There must be quite a back story to the place!
2 years agoYes, somewhere I have a photo of unmasked crowds in Playa. I think those tourists definitely spiked covid in Quintana Roo.

2 years agoYes, the degradation is obvious and the admission price is high. As dumb tourists we of course know nothing of the politics or management of INAH. There must be other sites with similar problems?
2 years agoJust checked… the fruit is called Jicara and yes, it’s from a Calabash tree. The locals use the hard casing of the fruit as bowls.

2 years agoAh Xixim! One of our families favourite tales to tell! We drove, in 2 cars, from Uaymitun to Celestún and took one of the Flamigo cruises available from the bridge! Great as always! My sister had also taken notice of the many signs for Xixim and suggested we ought to go… it’s probably just down the road a bit… 11 km of gravel, sand or worse and with lots of misgivings we finally arrived! Back then it was still open but with very few guests. We did have a great meal in the restaurant, had a tour and returned with enough chuckles to liven up any family gathering by just saying “Remember Xixim?” 😉
2 years agoI’ll keep looking in my previous blogs… one of the locals told me they cut the fruit in half (quite hard shell) and use them as bowls!
2 years agoThe site has degraded over the past few years… the museum used to be open and was worth the visit. More lately there’s been indigenous protests and attempts to remove control from INAH and return the site to the Maya

2 years agoJust love Chaya Maya, but we go to the other one on Calle 55 x 62 y 60! It has more room! My fav is Pollo Pibil while Elaine loves Cochinta Pibil!

One advantage of reading stories as history is that you can skip to the end and see how it turned out. I wish I could do that right now with Ukraine!
