Looking forward to reading more entries…much more pleasant than reading our newspapers.
There are, in my experience, soldiers who were there but rarely spoke of it, and those who peeled potatoes in the background and never stop going on about their heroism. It's a generalisation, I know, but maybe not bad as a five-line summary. I'm delighted your grandfather enjoyed the freedom he brought people.

1 month agoI am 1/4 Dutch, and the second thing I notice in this photo are the flowerbeds lined up with the headstones, which induces an unexpected pride in my heritage.
1 month agoMy grandfather (Canadian) wouldn't speak of the war except when he spoke of his time in Netherlands moving from town to town to let citizens know they had been liberated.

Corner churches are majestic in their small might. The people who tend them are the most admirable. A haven or solace for thoughts of why they are there in the first place. To pray for those we should never forget.
