We really loved the Yucatan. It always felt safe, the people were lovely and the roads were easy to ride except for the main tourist strip leading to Cancun. We are flattered and honoured that you view our blog as a potential resource. Enjoy the ride.

Hi Steve
There have been a few journals that we have read where the folks haven't enjoyed Belize (but others where they loved it) so hopefully we made the right choice. We're going to be referring to your journal for info once we get to the Yucatan.
Regards
Jean-Marc

Our daughter, who used to live in Belize, had a fit every time we floated the notion of cycling there. Her claim was that it was too dangerous due to gangs, poor roads and general poverty. So we never did.

Great bird photos today! Especially the little long-toes...

Many of the temples now have wooden staircases to take you up to near the top. The steepest climbs are now off limits to tourists, apparently after a few deaths.

Dizzying. I’d forgotten how insecure we felt scrambling up and down.

I’d give this one five likes if I could.

This is such a strange bird. We saw them when kayaking in the Jaguar Preserve in Belize. As I remember it, they were hanging upside down from the vines with their wings outstretched, making that weird call of theirs.

I remember these from Tikal, wandering around in large gangs. What a strange bird.

I’ve never seen any place at all like it. Great photos! I’m very envious of you being there with the right camera and the knowledge of what to do with it. I think I just had an instamatic with me at the time, and was a terrible photographer.

Tikal blew our minds. I am worried that everything else will seem insignificant now.

Visiting Flores and Tikal 20 years ago is one of our favorite travel memories. It wasn’t too touristy yet then. Our guide lives on the island and picked us up on her punt to ferry us out to the island and her home where we stayed the night. The next morning she drove us up to Tikal for the day. We ended it sitting on top of the ruins watching the parrots come to roost in the canopy below us as the sun went down.

We drove back to her home, the empty road filled with figures walking in the dusk. Homes all along the highway were dark inside, save for the illumination from their cars sitting outside shining their headlights through the front doors.
