To Krakow am See

starting part of the Berlin-Kopenhagen long-distance cycle route

Today`s ride was broken into two separate parts. We began by leaving Wismar and riding almost 20 kilometres south to the town of Bad Kleinen. Here we boarded a regional train that took us 35 kilometres east to the town of Butzow. At Butzow we intersected  the long distance Berlin Kopenhagen cycle way and continued our ride south to the town of Krakow am See.

First up, bakery stop.

Bob KoreisFunny how the brain works. I thought the sign said Bike Factory until I read the caption and looked a second time.

A final look at Wismar.

A beautiful home with a thatched roof on our way to Bad Kleinen.

Our route to Bad Kleinen seemed to be on an old rail line.

and sometimes in forested areas.

Very quiet and peaceful with lots of birds.

Approaching the town of Bad Kleinen, we started to notice a parade of vintage Cadillacs coming toward us.

There must have been 30 of them, one after another.

Our train ride to Bützow went smoothly but buying tickets at a station kiosk was difficult for us. We did finally manage to buy two tickets but could not figure out how to add our bicycles. Fortunately, the conductor on board was happy just see our passenger tickets. Not sure what we would have done otherwise.

From the Bützow train station it was easy to get onto the cycle route as it was  close by. We stopped at the first bench we saw to have a sandwich and then we were off on the second part of the day, a 44 km ride following the Kopenhagen - Berlin cycle path. The German part of the the Berlin-Kopenhagen cycle route actually ends at Rostock - about 40 KMs north of Butzow where you catch the ferry to Denmark to complete the long distance cycle route. So we are missing only a small part of the  German portion and one day we will need to complete the most northerly part in Denmark.

Not a big bike car but there were few people on this train and we were the only ones with bikes.

We rode a long section on cement tracks beside a canal.

Kirsten KaarsooI seem to remember reading somewhere that these were old tank routes. I could be wrong as I don’t recall where I read it.

An old draw bridge.

This seemed to be a man made water way leading off the canal. We thought it was pretty.

The route was a bit rough at times through forested areas.

At Inselsee and the bike sign shows that we go straight ahead.

We are on it!
Heart 2 Comment 0
This was a long stretch of forested area with small rolling hills.
Heart 2 Comment 0
Mostly pine trees.
Heart 2 Comment 0
Appeared to be a managed forest for pine logs.

Every once in a while a section of rock road would appear. These are tougher than cobble stones.
Heart 2 Comment 0
We thought that this brick structure seemed out of place.

Smooth track now.

Rural views on a sunny day are picturesque.

Back to the cement tracks. Great for riding side by side until you hit on coming traffic.

Done. A challenging day. We are on the deck of our hotel/restaurant on the shore of Krakow am See. We did not need to go far for dinner either. It is a small town with few choices anyway.
