Granya to Leatherbarrel Creek

4-7 March 2023

I grabbed a ride from Albury to Granya to remove a day's riding along routes I've done a zillion times. I did ride this bit at the beginning of the tour, so Albury notes are in that first journal entry.

Granya- small village. Public toilets available behind the hall. Water is from a bore so needs to be treated. The pub down the road is not currently open. You can probably camp behind the hall by the public toilets or down the road at the recreation reserve. I always camp in the state park near the Scout Hut. The state park is down Webb Road - there is a drop toilet in the camping area. There is a creek that you can get to by the Scout Hut but the creek may not always be running. This water needs to be treated.

The Kurrajongs - drop toilet and camping area here. No water.  Short bushwalk up to overlook has good views. Longer walk possible.

Burroweye - popular camping area along the river - usually at least 4-6 caravans camping here. No toilets or picnic tables.  Best to bring own water, but Murray River will always have some flow.

Small camping area option on public land just before Alfred Gap. Not marked - it is down a track that takes off near an electricity pole. Have to go through a private gate.

Gadds Bend- quite popular free camp that gets overflow from Jingellic. No toilets or picnic tables and not much shade.  Jingellic has a free camp on public land below the pub but is generally very full. Pub does meals and pay showers. Also a few cabins you can book. Jingellic also has a small general store.

Walwa - pub which does meals and has accommodation, good general store with takeaway meals. Public toilets where you can get water. No good shelter here. Caravan park is along the river and has a good camp kitchen with freezer where you can freeze water bottles. Several shelters. Cabins for rent but book ahead. Good shade. Old but clean amenities block.

Tintaldra - public toilets where you can get water. Pub is currently open. Small caravan park. Museum/tea house with limited hours.

Towong - no services - free camp on opposite side of river.

Khancoban - pub and motel, good takeaway at roadhouse, visitor info centre with national park info, shopping centre away from main road has a nice cafe (gluten free options) with good general store attached. Also thrift store, chemist and pizza place open in evenings. Public pool is free. Caravan park is expensive but has brand new amenities block and huge indoor kitchen area.

Geehi and Tom Groggin - very popular official camping areas along the Geehi and Murray Rivers, respectively. Better shade chances at Geehi. Drop toilets and some picnic tables at both. Treat the water at these sites.

Leatherbarrel Creek - small camping area right on the road. One well-used drop toilet, couple picnic tables. Creek runs permanently - definitely treat the water here.
