Milwaukee, WI to Cedarburg, WI

Day 1 - Thursday

I left home in Louisville, KY at 7:30 a.m., first driving to Chicago to meet Cameron at the O'Hare airport.

As I had some time, I made a small detour to get some National Park stamps at the Forest Preserves of Cook County, picking up stamps for the Chicago Portage NHS and the I & M Canal National Heritage Corridor. I may ride the canal path at a later time.

Cameron’s flight arrived at 1 p.m. and he was ready to be picked up 30 minutes later. He wanted Steak and Shake for lunch so he found one nearby. Apparently there weren't any further north than Chicago.

He forgot t-shirts so we also made a quick stop at Target which was in the same parking lot.

We finally got on the road heading north to Milwaukee on I295 which eventually led us to I94.

As we crossed the Wisconsin border we looked out for the Fairfield Inn and Culvers that we stayed at two years ago on our Lower Michigan Lake Tour.

When we arrived in Milwaukee I had decided to park at the ferry parking lot and pay the fee for the number of days we would be away.

Once we had everything loaded up, we got away at 4:30 p.m., way later than expected.

Loading up.

We took familiar roads as we were here two years ago and ended up cycling along the waterfront as before. North Lincoln Memorial Drive took us to the top of a hill and from there we passed through the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee before picking up the Oak Leaf Trail heading north out of town. We passed through Milwaukee suburbia on the Brown Deer Trial, then through some of the outlying towns such as Mequon and Thiensville on the Ozaukee Interurban Trail.

The trail had cracks caused by the winter weather so was bumpy in places.

We arrived in Cedarburg at 7 p.m., and taking our Warmshowers host Keith's advice we ate at The Stilt House for dinner. I had the flat bread and Cameron who wasn't to hungry had a Pretzel.

After dinner we rode the main street to check out the town. I always like to check out old theatres in small towns. The Rivoli in Cedarburg didn't disappoint.

We checked in with Keith to make sure he was home and with confirmation, we rode over the Interurban Bridge which spans Cedar Creek, and from there it was another half mile to Keith's house, arriving at at 8:15 p.m.

After settling in, we joined Keith down at his firepit by the pond for beers and conversation which ranged from travel, to bike touring and then to ice hockey which his family likes to enjoy on their pond in the winter.

By 10:30 p.m. everyone was tired so we retired for the night.
