Day 50 Iron Mountain MI to Escanaba MI

It was  52° when we got up so again we layered up. We left a bit before 6:30 as we knew we had to go over 50 miles. We decided not to follow the GPS and followed bike route 10 on route 2 East. The GPS route said we would have 4 climbs but following the bike route we didn’t have any. It was so nice just rolling along. We did have hills and a few times we were granny gear but nothing like the last two days. Finally our legs got a bit of a rest. Also by staying on the bike route we got to go through towns and see some things. When we got to the town Norway, there so much fog you could cut it with a knife and it felt raw. It almost felt like we were in fall not summer. We came to an iron mine and we would have liked to stop but we were too early. We did come to a Huge Mama Bear and from one mama bear to another, we needed out picture taken together. We came upon a casino and I suggested we go in and see what we could do with $10.00 each. We did not come out rich. We actually came out $20.00 poorer. Oh well. Once we left the casino we became 1 hour older as we hit the eastern time zone. That meant we arrived an hour later to our next destination and we will lose an hours sleep. ☹️. We stopped to get an ice cream and while we were sitting on a bench outside the store two others came to share the bench. They were traveling on their motorcycle so I asked them if they wanted to trade bikes. Chris quickly said no. Jim asked about our trip so we stayed and chatted awhile. He says he has read about people biking cross country.

Turns out today is their 15th wedding anniversary. They dated in college but then went on their separate ways marrying other people. About 17 years ago they started dating again and now have been married for 15. We made it to Escabana and walking back to our room from dinner we noticed this plaque. We had to get a picture as we knew Scott Wood would appreciate it. Tomorrow we head to Manistique MI.

Today's ride: 55 miles (89 km)
Total: 1,636 miles (2,633 km)

Phil/Ann DettwilerWe are so hoping your MI journey allows you to ride along the upper edge of the lake, like when we vacationed in the rental conversion van with our kids. (You will have more fun and freedom! 👏🏻) It is just gorgeous and the scenery helps with the boredom. But….pasties are for sale along the way. (Just sayin’)
