Tourist day in the Lauterbrunnen valley - Back to the Swiss Alps and on to the Istrian Peninsula - CycleBlaze

Tourist day in the Lauterbrunnen valley

Today all three of us were hurting from our adventure yesterday. Sore quads, knees, calves, and toes… So, we decided to opt for a tourist day where public transit would take us around.  We headed over to the other side of the valley to look back at where we had been and to see the snow capped mountains from another perspective. First we headed to Wengen another car free town on the other side of the valley, we found a nice cafe with a view of the mountains for lunch and then took a cable car up to Mannlichen for almost a 360 degree view of the mountains.

In Murren today we spotted the place where the paragliders take off. We stopped and watched several of them taking off. Some of them ran just a few steps and took off while others ran for a ways lifted off then came down and ran again before finally lifting off.

We had been seeing these lines across the mountain from far away and couldn’t tell what they were. On our cable car ride up to Mannlichen we discovered what they are they are metal pipes bolted together to form fence like structures. We assume they are for catching snow or rocks.

greta combsI wonder how often a big boulder goes crashing down the mountainside and if the fences always stop it?

There were a few large snow fields left where we were and this dog was having a great time playing in the snow.

The valley floor seems very far away. Way in the distance we could see Murren and what looks like Gimmelwald where we are staying way towards the end of the valley

greta combsI wonder if Heidi and the grandfather were up this high when they had to sled down the mountains to get to town - whee...

Walking through the fields we found what look like crocuses among the cow pies.

We did it! We hiked down a Swiss mountain trail yesterday, lived to tell the story and were able to walk around today, if not without a little groaning now and then….. especially when going down hill….

The pension where we are staying is a very cozy, rustic place. Very homey.

Jane FletcherTo greta combsWe went to Gimmelwald last time we were in Switzerland based on a Rick steves recommendation. It was rainy and cold and we stopped in the pension for some hot chocolate and to warm up. We said then that if we ever came back we wanted to stay there so we did!

The clouds moved in and our view of the snow capped mountains disappeared rather quickly.
