Down and down and down again

Hiking Mountain Trails in the Lauterbrunnen valley

Today we decided to get out and explore some of the hiking trails in the area. We took the cable car up to Murren and then hiked following the signs to Lauterbrunnen.  Our plan? Well, we didn’t have a real thought out plan but we had a sandwich and snacks and water and the all trails app. What could go wrong? Well, nothing went wrong but we got to Lauterbrunnen 4 hours later after hiking increasingly rough and increasingly steep, and rocky paths. Hurting feet and knees later we made it! Took the bus and cable car back to Gimmelwald. The hike was gorgeous through the woods with the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau mountains peeking at us through the trees and sometimes coming into full view.

The view out our window this morning

On our way up to Murren in the cable car we saw one of the paragliders quite close. There always seem to be some paragliders soaring in the sky

Murren is a really picturesque town

This was near the beginning of the hike. It was slightly downhill and manicured crushed gravel

We also passed an area where there had been a washout. Luckily for us it had been fixed and we could pass through

We came to a fence across the path and were trying to decide what to do. Did we really want to turn around and go back uphill? Luckily a local came by and showed us that part of the fence was actually a gate.

The fence was around a pasture that opened up and gave us a fabulous view of the Eiger Monch and Jungfrau

Need a break?

Path getting more rugged. After this we don’t have any more pictures on the path because it got so that we really had to concentrate on where we placed our feet.

Yay! Made it to the end of the mountain trail. Just some steep manicured gravel and asphalt to go.

Look we can see Lauterbrunnen ahead.

This map shows the area where we are. At the tippy top is Piz Gloria where we were yesterday. Over to the left and about 2/3 of the way down the page is Gimmelwald. Over to the right is Mürren where we started our hike and down on the valley floor over on the right is Lauterbrunnen where we finished our hike.

The phone says we walked six miles today, we are pooped and ready to put our feet up! Walking downhill for that long is hard….
