La Rochelle

Two nights and a day in a beautiful sea port.

We enjoy a day in La Rochelle. We spent a night here in 2018 on our way north and were struck by the beauty of the harbour area which has been so well preserved. This time our apartment is walking distance from the main wining and dining area and just down the rue from the hotel where our friends are staying.

We spend a pleasant day walking the old town, enjoying the market and later finding a small place off the beaten track to dine out on galettes accompanied by a hearty Bordeaux.

Des huītres in every size and shape.

My galettes were called Arthur for reasons that escape me.

La Rochelle has a history going back to Roman days and has maintained a standing in modern times because of its port, La Pallice, the only deep water port of the French Atlantic coast; it is ranked as the sixth most important port of France.

A intriguing bronze sculpture on one of the port’s walls. Possible to read lots into it.

Fittingly the cathedral uses giant clam shells as baptismal fonts.

La Rochelle was well placed for the establishment of trade with the ‘New World’.

It makes quite a change to be reminiscing and chatting in English. After a cup of tea in our friends’ hotel, we feel relaxed enough to tackle a night’s sleep in our less than perfect sofa bed.
