RT 66 Day 43-Dark and Stormy

Day 43 was looking like a rainout, and even though the clouds closed in the big rains held off and we flew down the road at an 18 mph pace thanks to some mighty tailwinds.

Lexington, IL provided a great bike path complete with RT 66 state by state advertisements. A few memories of each state come to mind…CA had the Mojave desert.

Arizona provided the steepest climb up through Kingman and the long views of majestic rock formations.

New Mexico’s high elevation was challenging due to ice, snow and the Continental Divide.

Oklahoma was hills and winds and murals. The fried onion burger is not to be missed.

Sadly, not much to say about the 12 miles of Kansas we rode through. We liked what we saw but didn’t see much.

Missouri was scenic hills, livestock and green grass. For me, this state captured the essence of RT 66.

Finally, we’re finding Illinois to be flat, windy, rainy but also picturesque with historic towns.
