WMR…on Monday…in Washington

Port Townsend to Port Ludlow; a short, easy ride reminiscent of the Napa Eagle’s Weds. Morning Ride

Everything about today’s ride reminds me of our weekly Wednesday Morning Ride with the Napa Eagle Cycling Club. Well, everything except today’s ride was 19.1 miles and the WMR from our house is 26 miles. And our ride today was a little shy of 1100 feet of climbing while the WMR has over 1200 feet. And we began our ride today after 11 am in order to arrive late enough to eat lunch while we waited to check in, while the WMR for us starts at 8:30 am, much earlier. And the ride today was in Washington, not Napa, California like the WMR. And, most importantly, it’s Monday, not Wednesday. What was I thinking!

Here we are, ready to ride the Monday Midday Ride in Washington state.

OK, we’ve established that today’s ride has no resemblance to the WMR, but it was still an enjoyable, albeit, short ride.

We left Port Townsend on the main drag and rode up a short hill, then turned off onto a side road that was less traveled. Much of today was spent in a tunnel of trees, with only occasional glimpses of a view, so I did not take too many photos. The last 6 or 7 miles were ridden on a road with moderate traffic and a narrow shoulder, which wasn’t too bad but you still had to worry a bit about upcoming traffic.

The first view we stopped for. What would you do if this view was across the street from you?

You would build a raised viewing area, of course!

We rolled into the Port Ludlow Resort about 1:15; Rich beat us there by 5 minutes in the truck and, surprisingly, was already able to check in. Naturally, Jim and my room wasn’t ready yet, so our plan was to eat lunch first. But then, miraculously, a room was ready for us.

The room is on the ground floor adjacent to the meeting room. We suspect it rarely gets used actually. Since it is on the shady side of the building, the room was cold inside. But it has a gas fireplace so we fired that up and it is now quite cozy. It took a looong time to get hot water to the shower-like 10 minutes-but then it was fine. It has a view of the pond, rather than the harbor but it is a nice view. Like the other rooms, it has a jacuzzi tub and other nice amenities and is very quiet since there are no meetings going on.

After lunch Jim and I took a walk on the beach and around the grounds. Now we are kicking back while I do this journal.

Another postcard-ready view of the Resort

View looking across Port Ludlow (the waterbody) from the Port Ludlow Marina. That’s confusing, right, but accurate according to Wikipedia.

Tomorrow is our last riding day :-(  As usual, my feelings are mixed. I would love to continue riding but I miss my critters and the familiarity of home. Jim and I will visit friends in Seattle for a couple of days before making the push for Napa.

Today's ride: 19 miles (31 km)
Total: 387 miles (623 km)
