Day 19: Conneaut, OH to Ripley, NY

The Empire State

Well, I made it. Tracy made us oatmeal and we waited out the rain for a good while. We were finally able to get on the road around 11. By then, I was already hungry again, so I stopped at Pizza Hut and got enough food for the day… after that, I pretty much just stuck it out on the road. It didn’t take me long to hit Pennsylvania. Route 5 had nice wide shoulders and most cars were fairly considerate. Eventually, I stumbled upon Erie. There was quite a bit of construction going on, making it difficult to navigate, but I made it to the other side. Back to being on the road. I would stay pretty much on the same street for 90% of my ride today, only stopping for snacks and water. In the last few miles, I pedaled into the Empire State. There were many orchards and vineyards lining the side of the road as I got closer to my destination. Once I made it, Michael was waiting outside for me and made us dinner. We walked out to their beach access and watched the sunset.

Quite the view

Merianne ShelmidineIt’s been great riding on your shoulder Jared! As usual, you have done well in your planning and landing on your feet when things do not go as planned. Sincere thanks to all the folks along your trek for their kindness. Onward! ❤️

It was a peaceful night. My journey is nearly over, and this was a great place to look back on it.

Today's ride: 55 miles (89 km)
Total: 1,082 miles (1,741 km)

Gregory GarceauOn my second long-distance bike tour, I rode from Minneapolis to Boston and I had a similar thrill riding along Lake Erie. I was more than 30 years older than you, though. I envy you doing it right out of college. Also, I really enjoy seeing young people writing about their experiences here on Cycleblaze. Well done, dude.
