I can’t say enough about the Spoke’n Hostel. They live hospitality. It was a quiet restful afternoon. A needed respite. Soft light, soft background music, soft mattress…..
We met Russ, who is on another adventure to Washington D.C. No agenda, taking each day as it is given. Gregarious, he likes to share his story. We talked him into eating dinner with us at the Tiger Town Brewery. Good food. Jolét stopped by on her way home to wish us well. Such a sweet and kind heart. She has the gift of hospitality. Plan your visit to Mitchell now.
Sleep came fast for me or so Rhonda and Russ say. I wasn’t even the first one up as another guest had already made the coffee. The next door cafe was closed this morning so Rhonda made the Hostel guests pancakes for breakfast. They fueled the climb that started right away. The climb was 6.65 miles long and steady with the wind to our back. Half way up we met Rene and Lance from Wisconsin. They too are headed to D.C. using the alternate Trans Am Non-Stop which incorporates some gravel.
Soon we topped out on Keyes Cr Summit at 4369’. Then it was a screaming downhill for the next 30ish miles. We descended through green forested high country into the arid sagebrush steppe and gorge country. The narrow gorges funneled the wind this way and that. Off in the distance we saw the clouds building. With our heads down and minding the traffic behind us we pushed on towards Dayville. As we entered town we saw Rene and Lance’s bikes parked outside the cafe. Rene came outside and invited us in to join them for lunch.
Our ride for the day was concluded. We prearranged with the Community Church for a place to stay. The church has been hosting cyclists since 1976! Rene spent the noon hour (which by now was 2pm) convincing Lance to stay here the night. By now, Russ has caught up and he too has joined us in the church.
Cindy, who leads the bike ministry for the church greeted us and gave us the run of the place. Showers, restrooms, washing machine, kitchen with food stores specifically for cyclists and floor space for our sleeping pads. Just perfect.
We are all showered and clothes are washed. We walked back to the cafe before it closes at 4 and grabbed dinner to go. And now the bike stories are flowing and pictures of grandkids are being shared. Although short, another full day.
38 miles 2031’
Today's ride: 38 miles (61 km)
Total: 458 miles (737 km)
