Regensburg to Deggendorf.

Last days on the Donau- a fun day’s cycling ends damply at Deggendorf campsite beside the river.

An early start from Regensberg sees us heading south from our most northern point in Germany. The day is  hot but with a good track and plenty of interest on the water, the kilometres fly by. Barges, some of them looking like tourist cruise ships begin to appear. The sight of passengers sitting back enjoying a pre – lunch drink makes  us slightly envious- but only for a moment.

The Donau widening.

We ourselves enjoy a fortifying lunch of fresh brot rolls, the best of the wurst, procured from a delicatessen at Worth ab der Donau and tomatoes followed by a cuppa. While eating in the shade, our French friends turn up and we share experiences.

Lunch stop.

Late in the afternoon we are caught by a thunderous storm and arrived at Deggendorf (a Tolkeinish name if ever there was one) not a little dripping though well protected by our Ground Effect Stormtroopers. Fortuitously a camping sign looms up right on the edge of town and equally fortuitously there is one site left under a tree, merely a biscuit’s toss from the river. Soon the tent is up and the sun is blazing again.

Cramped campsite but nice position near river.

These river cruisers continue through the night, lit up like a Christmas tree.

A quick ride to the nearest supermarket ensures we have dinner sorted for us and for our Dutch neighbour- a woman walking the track with a massive black hunde which carries its own pack – of what, I’m not sure. Sleep comes quickly but is occasionally interrupted by tourist barges gliding by, lit up like Christmas trees, and by road and rail traffic on the bridges nearby.

Today's ride: 83 km (52 miles)
Total: 2,209 km (1,372 miles)
