The Route: Tour de Bourgogne

As we charge up the Rhine, it is tempting to think of carrying on, past Basel, to the Rheinfall, The Bodensee, and on to the source near Andermatt in Switzerland. But that would be an entirely different adventure. Rather, we need to cut west, past Mulhouse, and get to Dijon, the capital of Bourgogne. It's a 250 km hop, following the famous EV 6, and paralleling the river Doubs for much of the way.

At Dijon we will be in the heart of Burgundy. The region is famous for its wines, the best of which come from a short 50 km run south, through Gevrey-Chambertin and to Beaune. We'll get to that, but first it's a spin around the "Tour de Bourgogne". It looks like this:

The appeal of this is that it is a famous sounding circle route, that should include a lot of pleasant gliding along canals like the Canal du Nivernais, Canal de Bourgogne, and Canal du Centre. We have been on some but not all of this before.  We'll set off from Dijon in the westerly direction, which is counter clockwise on the loop. But wisely, when we hit Monceaux les Mines, instead of heading back up to Dijon, we'll strike off for Chalon. That means we actually will skip Gevrey-Chambertin and Beaune this time. Sadly, in the past a big draw would have been the chance to visit Keith and Sue Klein in Gevrey, or Keith might have jumped on his bike to come find us somewhere on the route. But Keith passed away in July. He will be much missed.

Here is a 2017 Keith selfie that his wife Sue posted here on Cycleblaze:

We have many memories of Keith, triggered by our photos. Ours and others are scattered around a bit, in emails and posts. Gathering them together would be a nice project.

We will be thinking of this pair as we pass through Bourgogne.

Gregory GarceauI forgot to thank you for posting about Keith's death on the Forums. And thank you for remembering Keith again in your journal. That guy was like a hero to me, and I regret that I never took him up on his suggestion that I should come to France and tour in the land of my ancestors.

Almost all of his journals were posted in the very early days of Cycleblaze. As most of us early Cycleblazers know, those journals never got hundreds and thousands of “hearts” like the new ones do. I can safely say that if Keith had written his journals now, they'd be some of the most well-loved journals on this site—especially for anybody with any interest at all in touring in France.

Steve Miller/GrampiesTo Gregory GarceauWe truly counted Keith as one of our friends and feel glad that we had the chance to meet up with him on several occasions. You should still consider a tour in France. The small roads through charming villages are always lovely and the food never disappoints.
