Day 46 - Sigmaringen to Riedingen

Sunday - Practically a day of rest

Although we had to put up with a bit of headwind at times, it was a fairly easy ride to Riedingen where we had some eis and then found a hotel.

Temperatures today topped out at 35 C. So a little cooler overall but still very warm.

We are still experiencing such wonderful weather.  Even though it is very hot at times, we are getting used to it and we can usually find shade to stop and rest in.  Then it feels so good when we start up again and the breeze hits us.

Before leaving Sigmaringen we take a few more pictures illustrating the importance of the castle and the ruling family

At the base of the cliff the castle is built on, a couple of carefully chosen chess peices, a King and a Queen

The walls of the cliff had quite a few holes worn by weather over the centuries. Today, they provide accommodation for many birds.

Erika kept insisting on additional pictures to capture the full extent of the castle. This is a castle still owned and taken care of by the family it has belonged to for a millenium. Look up the Hohenzollern family and dynasty.

Dam and other waterworks as we are leaving Sigmaringen

I think this was a bridge that was no longer in use

A really lovely path to start the day

Swans and people sharing the river

We checked to see if this church was open, but in spite of it being Sunday, it was not

On the upper Donau there is quite a bit of gravel pathway but it is very good in this dry weather

You gotta love coming across stuff like this on a hot day. I soaked my arms

The gravel path got quite narrow at one point but it was incredibly beautiful and refreshing at that point

These people have a lovely garden and a spot right on the river

This bridge looks to be very old, at least the columns.

Here is a better look at it.

A great big old barn

Not sure what this is, I didn't see an indication that it was the rathaus. Sometimes I am asking myself "What the heck town are we in now?"

Another of those cute water fountains

Note the big stork model. These are all over the place, just like the orca models in victoria

I still don't know what town this was, but it had another really pretty water fountain type thing.

So Erika has helped me out here and it was apparently in Mengen that I took those last few pictures

Across a hot wide valley toward the next town

We often pass and are passed by the same cyclists several times in the day. This young couple on a heavily loaded tandem are a good example.

Approaching Riedingen, it is still pretty much midday. But I want to look around for a place to stay because the next town of similar size is a fair ways away

Crossing the bridge in Riedingen, note the stork model and also people playing in the river

We could see several large trout in the river below

We don't know what this was about, but it looks interesting and weird

So we are installed in a very nice room in the Rosengarten hotel, recommended to us by the man who served us our eis.  It was their last room available and several other parties of cyclists have arrived since who apparently had reservations.

We went for a little ride around town to find a store where we could get some supplies.  Only gas stations are open on a Sunday.  The second one of the two that are in this town had a better selection for us.  (Nuts, fruit juice, chocolate bars, pretzels, smarties, important stuff like that)

And finally, for the first time since this trip began I am feeling more or less caught up on the journal!!!!!

Today's ride: 44 km (27 miles)
Total: 1,804 km (1,120 miles)
