8/2/19 - Longview to Cathlamet

After a wonderful breakfast with Marti and Dave, all five of us rode together to Starbucks where they meet up with cycling friends on Friday mornings.

Finetastic hosts, Dave and Marti. I hosted them in Florida seven years ago. Great to see them again!

“Monkey” is a member of Fine household. Very friendly.

This turned out to be very helpful with our route details for when we get into Oregon. Their friend, Art, provided info on roads to skip, alternate route options, and especially side routes and Golden Gate Bridge viewpoint spots in San Francisco.

Light rain while we were there but then it stopped for a while. Marti rode out with the three of us to point us in our respective directions. Rose and Robb to Gresham and Portland, respectively, me towards Cathlamet and Puget Island for my next host. Rose will rejoin me early next week. Robb is continuing to New York.

I had a nice tailwind from the east and shorter, more gentle climbs today. Much better than yesterday’s demoralizing headwinds and long hills. Stopped at a couple of yard sales. No finds but always enjoyable.

Tailwind this morning. Somewhat makes up for yesterday’s headwinds. Somewhat.

Today’s road, 4W, had nice wide shoulders

The clouds hung around all during my ride and heavier rains came a couple of times. Going downhill as I approached the bridge over the Columbia River was a good workout for my brakes. Wet brakes, no less.

Arrived at WS host on Puget Island and got all settled in. This is the gold standard in WS accommodations. A separate little apartment/guest house with kitchen, food, loose tea (!), television, movies, in addition to WiFi and, of course, a shower. And two adorable dogs, Mimi and Cosmos.

Last stop before crossing into Oregon tomorrow

Mimi came in to rest on my lap. Cosmos peeked in but didn’t stop.
