Villa Jardin de Reyes
Friday the 13th of June 2025
We rode a proper mineshaft today. In two 2 parts, each with a very different character.

The first 47 kilometers wonderful, riding gently downwards through a dramatic valley with colourful mountains on either side. Much to our regret afterwards, we never took a single photo during this section. Despite the fact that we had a lot more traffic to contend with than to which we have become accustomed, it was one of the most pleasant rides we have had for a long time.

Up until this point we even had a tailwind to help us along. As we started the steeper descent, as predicted by the weather forecast, the wind direction changed and we had a strong headwind for the rest of the ride. Along with the wind, the poor road surface and ever increasing traffic volume forced us to a pace slower than the first 47 kilometers.
We are now down to an altitude that is only a third of what we have been at for almost the entire trip. Everything is different. The weather, the vegetation, the birds. And it is much wealthier than up on the Altiplano. This is not only obvious in the people see on the streets but also in the contents of the shops.
After checking in at our digs we had booked for tonight, a small apartment, we quickly decided to spend another night here. The good internet connection was the kicker - there is some sport we are desperate to watch.
Firstly, tomorrow is the fourth day of the World Test Cricket Championship final between Australia and South Africa at Lords in London. The match has been a ding dong battle but South Africa, the underdogs, finished the third day in a dominant position.
Also, it is the final of the United Rugby Championship between Leinster and Leigh's team, the Bulls, who the pundits have given an even lesser chance of being triumphant than the cricketers.

The fourth day of the cricket started at six thirty Argentinian time.

South Africa managed to wrap the match up by lunchtime. Despite being the World Test Cricket Champions in a previous points based incarnation of the title, this is the first International Cricket Council trophy they have won in a knockout format competition after falling short on too many occasions in the past. A big monkey off their backs.
However, the Bulls were completely outclassed by Leinster.
We've had a great break here in Reyes. A nice apartment, some decent food stocks in close by shops and some (mostly) enjoyable sport streamed from Rubu.com.
A short day tomorrow, we think just to El Carmen southwest of San Salvador de Jujuy.
Today's ride: 80 km (50 miles)
Total: 1,380 km (857 miles)
