Talacasto

Today was always going to be a tough day.   The weather forecast suggested a cold head wind and that it what we got.  We have covered, what is for us, a good distance over the past few days and were already feeling the effects of it last night.  Ninety odd kilometers was not what we really wanted to do.

What we weren't expecting was that the road surface would be terrible for most of the way.  We have enjoyed great roads since arriving in Argentina and so today's broken surface took us by surprise.

In addition, there was a lot more traffic than we have had thus far on Ruta Cuarenta.  Combined with the poor road surface it meant we rode one behind the other for almost the entire day.

Grey skies and a less than interesting countryside didn't help lift the ride.

It was after five o'clock by the time we reached the comedor at Talacasto.   Within minutes of our arrival we were enjoying a cold beer and snacks.

Talacasto Comedor. A popular stop on Ruta Cuarenta north of San Juan.

Once we had recovered sufficiently we ordered some supper and setup the tent alongside the comedor.  There are a number of old railway buildings nearby that could be handy in windy weather but the wind had dropped and being next to the comedor gives us access to their wifi.

The weather has already started improving although it will be close to zero tomorrow morning with midday temperatures in the high teens.

We have booked a cabaña in Albardón for two nights from tomorrow.   It is only about forty five kilometers from here, just north of San Juan, so we have a couple of easy days to look forward to.

Today's ride: 93 km (58 miles)
Total: 2,579 km (1,602 miles)
