Patacamaya

Once again it was minus three degrees at seven o'clock this morning.  A good incentive not to rush out and start cycling.

We eventually wandered down to breakfast,  an Altiplano equivalent of what we might have at home consisting of fried eggs and bacon but accompanied by a hamburger bun instead of toast.

We eventually got cycling at about ten thirty.   By now it was an almost pleasant eight degrees but I still cycled the whole way with four layers on my upper body.

Today's ride was short, easy and stress free.

We even got a gift of mandarinas from a passing motorist.

Patacamaya is the scruffy junction of the F1 and the F4.  The F4 leads to the port of Arica in Chile.  Arica is a free port for Bolivia and the F4 carries a large part of Bolivia's international trade.

We headed first for the Hostal-Restaurante Viña del Mar which lies on the F4.  Unfortunately they only serve Charquekan, the Bolivian version being shredded dried llama meat served atop giant corn and accompanied by a purple potato.  It's a delicacy here but there is something about it's aroma that put me off.  I took the opportunity to check out the simple room they had available before we headed off to find an alternative lunch.

Lunch ended up being a simple menu del dia after which we checked out various other accommodation options.   None matched the Viña del Mar and some were downright atrocious.  Six kilometers of cycling backwards and forwards had us back at the Viña del Mar.  A hot shower and a clean room for 100 BOB is a good deal any day of the week.

Tomorrow we head to Konani where similarly simple accommodation will be our lot for the night.  So long as we can get at least one decent sized meal and a, preferably hot, shower we should be happy.

Today's ride: 38 km (24 miles)
Total: 815 km (506 miles)
