La Riconada

Monday the 14th of July 2025

From now until Mendoza we will try to avoid Ruta as much as possible because it is the main road between that city and San Juan.  So upon leaving San Juan we bypassed the intersection to join Ruta Cuarenta and joined up with the provincal route 5 instead.   This took us through attractive vineyards initially but later became rather messy general farmland.  Whatever traffic there was traveled slowly so it was much more relaxing than Ruta Cuarenta would have been.

After about eighteen kilometers we pulled in at a little bodega, Champañera Miguel Mas, a small bodega that makes sparkling wines using the traditional méthode champenoise.  We enjoyed a good hour there with Miguel Mas himself taking us through his setup and his wines.

Riddling rack. Miguel does his own riddling by hand.

Miguel disgorging a bottle to remove the now frozen lump of dead yeast after the riddling process.

Then we headed on through the town of Pocito to Bodega Segisa which some cabañas in addition to the winery.  We had hoped spend last night here but had to wait until today for a cabaña to become available.   I'm not sure why we had bothered.   The place is a dump but unfortunately there are no other options available.   So we are stuck here for two nights, the minimum period that they accept.

We had arranged a tasting of Segisa wines for this morning.   Like the cabaña it was a waste of time.  We had intended to visit another bodega few kiloaway afterwards but felt it would be as fruitless as Segisa.

So the rest of the day was spent sorting out accomodation in Mendoza.  Too many options can sometimes be a hindrance and hopefully we have chosen wisely.

I filled in the gaps with the birds in the vineyard, Shiny Cowbirds (Molothrus bonariensis) being the most common.

Tomorrow we head for Media Agua which might involve a bit of time on Ruta Cuarenta but we will do our best to use backroads where possible.

Today's ride: 29 km (18 miles)
Total: 2,670 km (1,658 miles)
