Humahuaca - The seventeenth step ... one step beyond! - CycleBlaze

Humahuaca

Another cold start to the day,  minus six again, but hopefully it will be the last freezing morning with us losing about 650 meters altitude today.

The ride itself was mostly downhill - only 210 meters of climbing, most of which was in a single climb out of a valley, and whopping 950 meters of descent.

A view of the sleeping giants from Ruta 9.

Yesterday we considered walking to the Puente del Diablo, the devil's bridge, but it would have been a few hours of walking to get there and back. Here's a long distance shot from Ruta 9.

We passed through some lovely valleys on our way to Humahuaca. This is where a hike to Inca Cueva starts.

Lots of cacti, many over five meters tall, on the hillsides. This attractive one was closer to the road.

In Argentina Google suggests the best routes for cyclists to take, very badly based on our current experience.   We could have had a sealed road all the way to our digs for tonight but Google took us on a convoluted route of ripio.

Once in Humahuaca we stopped for some excellent empanadas,  freshly baked to order so we were able to warm ourselves in the sun while waiting for them.  We were still wearing four layers at this stage with the temperature just reaching double figures.

Our digs for the night is a simple hospedaje on the southern edge of town.  They have a washing machine available and with sufficient sunlight and a light breeze blowing we were able to get all our laundry done.

Tomorrow we have a short ride to Tilcara so we have no need to rush off early.

Today's ride: 62 km (39 miles)
Total: 1,253 km (778 miles)
