Chilecito

Thursday the 3rd of July 2025

The first half of today's ride was done at a canter.  We averaged twenty kilometers per hour with hardly a pedal stroke needed thanks to a tailwind and a gentle downhill trajectory.  As we have become accustomed to on Ruta Cuarenta there was very little traffic.

Much warmer this morning but four layers were still needed.

Straight roads again. It's not everyone's cup of tea but I just love the scenery here in northern Argentina.

About halfway I remarked to Leigh how few cycle tourists we had seen on this trip. Her retort was that we're the only ones stupid enough to be doing it in winter.  About ten minutes later we came upon Bert and Mary from Florida, Estados Unidos.  What a wonderful encounter.   Their trip started in Alaska but was interrupted in Columbia so, due to the seasons, resumed it in Ushuaia and are heading north to connect the dots in Columbia.  We nattered away  for about 45 minutes and could have carried on for much longer.  We had to drag ourselves away so we could get to the digs we had booked in Chilecito.

The second half of the ride had two stings in the form of a 210 meter climb followed by a 150 meter climb. A nasty side wind over the last fifteen kays had us keen to get to our digs as as possible.

Chilecito itself is a rather uninspiring looking town but our home for the next two nights is a large and comfortable apartment near the centro.

A relaxed day celebrating our wedding anniversary.

A few standard cycle tourist chores in the morning followed by a light lunch at a suprisingly good restaurant near the plaza mejor.  Then some under 20 rugby  - the Junior Springboks beating England at the Under 20 Rugby World Cup.  Finally a far too big supper which we prepared at our apartment.

A short uphill ride tomorrow hoping to reach our destination in time to watch the Springboks take on Italy at midday Argentinian time.

Today's ride: 73 km (45 miles)
Total: 2,189 km (1,359 miles)
