Belén

Friday the 27th of June 2025

It was predicted to be very cold this morning but when we started at about ten o'clock it felt suprisingly warm and I soon stripped off one layer of clothing.  Over the first few kilometers we had a few very warm gusts of wind which seemed to make an even bigger mockery of the weather forecast.

Just outside Belén on the way to El Eje. Graffiti nearby accused the mining companies of poisoning the local water.

However the temperature soon plummeted and we ended up having a very cold ride.  An icy headwind negated most of the benefits of a substantial drop in altitude and we had to work hard the whole way to Belén.   The toughest section started about ten kilometers from Belén where we passed through a narrow gap in the mountains.  The scenery was exquisitely beautiful but we were in no mood to enjoy it and didn't even stop to take any pictures.

We have a simple apartment (a single cavernous room into which a bus could fit) for the next two nights.

Saturday the 28th of June 2025

A rest day for some planning of our journey  - not many options available - and to watch some rugby.

The next few days are predicted to be very cold and there may be some wildcamping involved as well so we will just have to don our big girls' brooks and get on with it.

Today's ride: 62 km (39 miles)
Total: 1,966 km (1,221 miles)
