Today I biked from Cameron to Twin Bridges. First stop was Ennis for an early breakfast. Ennis has a huge July 4th parade each year that shuts down all traffic through town for at least 1.5 hours. I made sure to pedal out of town long before the parade .
Over the hill (1,900 foot ascent across 10 miles) to Virginia City which has a unique place in history. In May of 1863 gold was discovered and within 3 months the town was 20,000 people in the middle of nowhere Montana. In the next 6 months there were 150 murders in this lawless town. Locals formed a vigilante committee and over the next 6 months hung 24 law breakers.
Gold rush was over by the 1890s and the town struggled for decades. In the 1940s Charles and Sue Bovey started buying up all the towns downtown buildings so they would not be torn down. Downtown is exactly like you would have seen it in the 1860s. Virginia City has the largest collection of 1860s buildings in the entire west, well worth a visit
