Coconino Plateau

I spent 3 days on the Coconino plateau, the high elevation region south of the Grand Canyon. It's a good example of a southwestern Sky Island, an isolated high elevation area that is radically different from surrounding lowlands. Most of the plateau is pine forested, above 6000 feet (1800 m) elevation.

The Coconino plateau and the even higher Kaibab plateau north of the Grand Canyon form the Grand Canyon region of the immense Colorado plateau.

The Colorado plateau is huge. Both of my Indian Country tours are mostly on the Colorado plateau. Half of my next tour will be on the Colorado plateau.

The Colorado plateau is named after the Colorado river which cuts an extremely deep diagonal cleft through the middle of the plateau.
