Rouen

Ken has always been extremely interested in Joan of Arc.  As we peddled down the Loire we followed her journey from meeting the King in Chinon to her triumph in Orlean.  Along the way there are magnificent statues of her in full flight on horse back.  Here in Rouen we of course were shown the horrific end to the story.  We visited the cathederal, Joan of course had never been there because she was locked up.  There is however a Joan of Arc Chapel with a statue of her .  It is a very different statue showing a young girl bound in chains.  We walked the beautiful pedestrian streets with the magnificent clock  the Gros Horlage and came to the square where at the age of 19 she was burnt at the stake.  They have built a spectacular modern church here in her honour. It contains ancient stained glass from other churches and once more the statue of Joan shows her bound in chains.  It wasnt until the 1920s that she was sanctified.
