Del Norte - Storm King CG - Dome Lake - Sargents

A cruisy start to th near the watere day fuelled on real espresso and avocado on hash browns topped with a fried egg had us at the bike shop for tyre sealant and a brake pad check. We were hailed as the first Nobo riders in shop hours; Annie and Immie had been through the day before (holiday Monday).

We did a resupply stop for groceries for 3 nights / 4 days. Still feeling sluggish from the day before we opted for 3 short days and a cabin in Sargents the night before our assault on the 3300m Marshall Pass.

The first sign we have seen specifically for our GDMBR route.

As I rode this track I thought how nice it would be to have it in your backyard, to ride regularly.

Just starting to hear the thunder...

We were chased out of del Norte by dark clouds and then thunder, and then some hailstones and raindrops that never really joined up on my coat.

We camped just short of Storm King CG - like 50m before the sign, because there was a flat spot and we were DONE!

It was cool overnight so we waited for the sun to melt the ice before packing the tents.

There were 2 passes in our day, the first just 6km in - Carnero Pass - and the 2nd a gazillion km upwind later - Cochetopa Pass.

Our goal was Dome Lake campground, and pedalling downhill in my biggest gear and still just making 5kmph, it took a long time to appear. We rode to the designated campground, sat in the toilet building, ate, and discussed how to make our tents stand up in the wind.

We opted to camp below the "No Camping" sign close to the water, and made dinner while waiting for the wind to drop. We were entertained by more dramatic and threatening clouds.

Some good roads, with minor hills, and a tailwind took us through Doyleville (a cross road) and on to Sargents for a shower and indoor bed.

The list of rules is bigger than our cabin, and I'm sure the road - US50 - in the background will not keep us awake!

George (Buddy) HallThat brings back some memories - in 2017 I stayed at Sargents, also in a tiny cabin - mine was on the opposite (east) side of the Trading Post from yours and it looks like it's a storage shed. I was riding the Western Express route with 2 others, and we met 2 couples riding the Great Divide route. It was challenging for us to ride up the road to Monarch Pass the next morning, but that's nothing compared to the difficulty of riding the gravel routes you ride to the passes. Enjoying your journal,
