Columbus to Hachita

After a shower, 2nd

Yesterday we  thought we'd be up and riding by 6 but we forgot about all the first day packing and organising...we made it on the road by 8.

My first view of the world just after 6 was the trees moving in a reasonably strong breeze. I cautiously checked and reassured myself it was in fact an Easterly - a tail wind for our first day on the route! Happy Birthday to me!

Our day was on Hw9 which gently climbs up to Hachita and does not carry much traffic. It does seem to have more than its quota of over width loads. We were passed by 3 mining truck trays which took up the whole road, a helicopter carcass - on its way to being fitted out I guessed - and a shed like structure that also owned the full width of the road. There were also 5 or more fully wrapped loads with escorts.

Early on we passed an onion farm and packhouse and a dairy farm  with fields of lucerne, then Iooong straight roads that seemed flat. With our tailwind it was certainly flat!

With the tailwind and only 75km planned we took a leisurely lunch break on the side of Hw9, unbothered by traffic.

Hachita was only 30 km later and we rolled up to the local/only store to get the key to our lodging at the community centre. We have the benefit of a kitchen, shower, stretcher beds and a huge space to park the bikes. Luxury!

After a shower and second lunch we did some life admin and checked the b

ikes over. I accosted a local dude to beg for some washers to stabilise one of my front fork carriers, and after searching in his shed, found the perfect fit. Yay for blokes sheds!

Then it more eating and sleeping .

George (Buddy) HallI'm looking forward to following along on your adventure. I've done several road tours, but have never done an off-road trail tour such as the GDMBR. I'm not sure I have the ambition to accomplish the tour you are undertaking, so I'll use your experience to help me judge. Best of luck to you both!
