Getting ready in Jo'burg

I know Johannesburg isn't really part of the trip but in reality it is the start of the journey.  It here that we often spend a few days getting the final preparations done before boarding a long haul flight to somewhere.

This meant we had a long drive up from Port Elizabeth in the old Landy, stopping off in Bloemfontein for a night to break the journey.  The road is top class and the traffic surprisingly light so it wasn't an ordeal.  On the way we passed one cycle tourist - Patrick Abrams from Belgium who was on his way from Cape Town to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe (see http://www.cycle2vicfalls.com/).  We stopped and had a good natter to him on the side of the road a few kilometers north of the Vaal River.  You can check him out at

We are staying in a peach of an AirBnB near the airport.  A lot better than the dive we stayed at in Bloemfontein.  It is very conveniently located with respect to the airport, MotorVia (the company that stores our Landy while we are away) and a shopping mall with everything that we need to finalize our preparations.

The bicycles have already been dropped off at Finish Line Cycles located at the shopping mall about one and a half kilometers away.  They have boxed our bikes a few times in the past and will also give the bikes a wash and lube this time.  The owner, Clint, has always made sure we have had excellent service.
