Into the mountains; 10th March 2024

Distance travelled: around 30 km

Cycled into the mountains with the vague intention of getting to the southern coast. I had planned quite a hilly day — around 1100 m of elevation on very narrow, quite mountain rounds.

The road was very scenic. Towards the end of the climb, a baby boar scampered across the road as we were approaching. This was quickly followed by the grunting of a large boar, probably the baby’s mother, from the wooded area to our left hand side. As we were now between the baby and the (assumed) mother we naturally started to pedal harder to get out of its territory. It followed us for about 50 metres, as we continued the final part of the climb — we could only hear its movement from the sound of the shrubbery, and despite the slight rush of adrenaline, we were moving comically slowly as it was the end of a long climb, the second day of cycling on a fully loaded tandem. Soon after, the boar stopped following us and we stopped for a break.

The descent down to the campsite was lovely. I think we may have hit our top speed of just over 60 km/h at this point.

The final leg to the campsite involved going the wrong side down the reservoir. After correcting ourselves, one of the staff who was on his way home saw us approaching and directed us to the site. He even offered to take our luggage (he could probably see we were very tired), which we gladly accepted.

I was pretty spent at the end of the day. It seems like I had found our elevation limit — around 1100m.
