Lodging list - The Only Thing Fast On This Tour Is The Ferry - CycleBlaze

Lodging list

Whitehall, MI - Whitehall Cottages - not cottages at all, but an old strip motel. It looked rough on the outside, but was nicely redone on the inside. Bikes had to stay in the hallway as the room was small. I'd stay again.Contactless check in. We never saw anyone on site. $113. prepaid

Ludington, MI - Best Western Lakewind. spacious room. Bikes inside ok. Grab and go sack breakfast, disappointing for a BW at this stage of COVID. $189.

Frankfort, MI R&R Motel - old strip motel. Very well cared for. They wanted bikes on the bike rack, far from the room. Short story, we ended up parking them in the car parking spot. No breakfast, far from food. IDK how I ended up with this choice, but it's not convenient or bike friendly, no matter how nice the room, which was average nice. $129. night

Leland, MI Falling Waters Lodge - Built right on a causeway. Very unique. Extremely average and smallish room. No breakfast. Bikes ok inside. $333. a night, cheapest place in town. It was our most expensive overnight.

Traverse City, MI - Knight's Inn - I think of this as a budget chain, but it was above average nice. Spacious room. Bikes inside with a $25. deposit. Continetal breakfast (here I wasn't expecting anything).  $159.

Charlevoix, MI - Villa Moderne - Old strip motel, run by a young veteran and his young family. Nice table and chairs in front of large window. Small, electric pink bathroom. Bike inside ok. No breakfast. I'd stay here again just to support the family. $125.

Harbor Springs, MI - Best Western Harbor Springs - large, nice room. No bikes inside. They have bike storage, far from our room. We put them next to the door. Hot breakfast. The only nearby restaurant is a Polish Grill, very busy. $199.

Mackinaw Island, MI - Harbor View Inn - huge place, I got confused going to the room every time. good location. As cheap as you can get for the island. Bikes outside. hot breakfast. $568./two nights.

Naubinway, MI - Adoba - the only game in town. Old strip motel. Inside was all done in lovingly cared for tongue and groove wood. We paid for a spacious two bedroom - which is inflated advertising. The living area was small, but did have a couch. No table/chairs. The bedrooms were extremely small as was the bathroom. I could hardly lift my arms in the shower. Bikes inside, it was a squeeze. No breakfast. $138. prepaid, contactless check in.

Sault Ste Marie, MI - Best Western. Hands down the best motel of the trip so far. Very spacious room, furnished a notch above. Bikes ok, hot breakfast. We wished we had a day off here. $143.

Paradise, MI - Magnuson Grand -Large motel on the water. Bikes in downstairs storage room. Hot breakfast. Room was large. I don't know why we stayed here - there were several mom and pop choices in town. It was a real hassle with the bikes downstairs and us on the 3rd floor. They did have an elevator. $207.

Robert's Corner , MI- America's Best Value Inn - Very nice room  - I was a little surprised - I was expecting more of a budget place. Bikes inside. Continental breakfast with hard boiled eggs. Large motel - we were a long way from the office. Two ice machines, both broken. On the outside of town, next to a bar and grill. Probably would pick something in town next time. This is another one of those lodging choice mysteries. $130.

Grand Marais, MI - Voyaguer Motel - Way outside of town. What was I thinking? Large room. Bikes outside - she wanted them in the garage (far away) I asked if they could go by the door. Yes, but then they were in the walkway, we put them under the stairs. Room was fine, but bikes a hassle. It wasn't quite 11 AM and she was knocking on the door telling Jacinto she wanted to clean the room. No breakfast. Ice in the office in little bags. $191.

Munising, MI - Picture Rock Inn and Suites - right in town - run down room. No breakfast. Bikes in room OK after clerk suggested under the window (out the door and around the corner for access). I asked if room OK. Yes. Another of those mystery choices. There are many. I was expecting far more for the price. Good coffee, which Jacinto seldom says. $236.

Marquette, MI - Cedar Motor inn - terrible - don't stay here - details - they purchased the motel next door, the Imperial - that's where we were. Perhaps the original building would have been ok.  It's now a very large motel. Snarky check in clerk (with whom I had a polite, but insistent conversation that I had requested a ground floor room, I lost - despite having written down Sarah's name) later sent me on a wild goose chase looking for ice. Two of their three ice machines were broken. No bath mat, no drinking cups, no fridge/microwave. Bedding was very suspect in that in looked like a five year old made the bed, but when I pulled the covers back, I think it was indeed clean. We paid $133. for a single queen. It was bad enough I was going to go next door to the Comfort Inn, but at $280., I decided it wasn't that terrible . . .  Marquette is a cute town - would be great for a layover - stay in the central downtown area to walk around. I generally like to stay on the outskirts for easy escape in the morning.

Michigamme, MI - Three Lakes Motel - $107. double queen, minimal continental breakfast. Two lovely sisters/owners. The complete opposite of last night as far as level of customer service. I'd stay here again in a flash. Fridge/microwave. Fan only, no AC. bike ok in room, although garage was offered.

Houghton, MI - Super 8 Motel - $115. night. single queen. minimal continental breakfast, does have hard boiled eggs. large room, easy chair. Fridge, no microwave. bike in room. Right on water. Not too convenient to food. Excellent price for area.

Copper Harbor, MI - Pines Resort. $103. Two queens. Bikes in room. Nice shower. Medium wi-fi. Old style TV. No breakfast or ice.  Desk fan.

Houghton, MI - Super 8 again.

Ontonagon, MI - Inn Towne Motel. $94. Double beds only. Nicely kept except shower.  Ice in office.  No breakfast. Fan in window.   shower water temperature inconsistent. Mostly cold.

Presque Isle, WI - Skyview Resort - $110. two queens. very squishy beds. Website advertises memory foam. Not our room. fridge, microwave. Ice at the restaurant. I liked the large shower. Fairly large. Microwave needed cleaned out. No filters for the coffee pot. Website said breakfast, but we didn't see any. Nice enough place.

Eagle River, WI - Super 8. Many choices here. I'm excited to have a king bed. Unreasonably excited . .  . We've been out in the woods for too long. It was a big disappointment. no wi-fi. bag breakfast with few choices. It did have a king bed and ice. The check in lady and cleaning ladies were extra nice. Good location. Family restaurant across the street was cheap and filling. $124.

Florence, WI - Nicolet Lodge - $85. remote check in. Paid the cleaning lady in the morning. Two bed apartment. Kitchenette. Wifi only worked in the morning. Excellent lodging for the price.

Pembine, WI - Grand Motel - $85. also. Kitchentte unit. Extra, extra nice for the money. One bedroom apartment with a full size sofa. Weak wi-fi. Make your own ice. Really good deal. This has been an expensive trip for lodging - the past few days, we have appreciated the good prices.

Peshtigo, WI - Edgewood Motel $64. Super Single. Fridge/microwave. Very small. Very tidy. Old pink tile bathroom in immaculate condition. The man said bikes allowed in the room, but carry them in, don't roll them, as the carpet is new.

Green Bay, WI - Quality Inn on Washington Street, downtown. $171. Not near as nice as I wanted. The first clue was the woman sitting on the curb of the drive smoking and the overfull ashtray where I parked my bike. Black, dirty carpet in the hallway and scraped doors and walls in the hallway. The room itself isn't bad. It just isn't good. Mostly it's the nicked and scratched furniture. There's a Ramada Inn nearby. I think I'd suggest that. King bed. sofa and coffee table. Fridge/microwave. Hot breakfast. Ice. Reasonably fast wi-fi.

Sturgeon Bay, WI -  Best Western Maritime - $179. they accepted a $20. coupon, making it $159. We had a king suite, but they are all upstairs, we kept the suite and downgraded to a queen. No sofa, but two office type chairs. Not lounging quality. The towels were oddly threadbare - with holes and strings hanging from the sides. The room was large, the bed comfy. A variety of pillows. Good wi-fi. fridge/microwave.  Cold breakfast, no protein. It just wasn't the stay I expected from a Best Western . . .

Sister Bay, WI - Nordic Lodge. $155. apartment. Spacious apartment with a real living room - sofa and two recliners. Fireplace. Full kitchen. Slightly cramped bedroom with a king bed.  Slightly slow internet. Large variety of cold items for breakfast - sandwiches and hard boiled eggs. We weren't expecting breakfast here, so were happy to get that. Good value for the money. Regular rooms are $99. and the reviews are spotty on those. The apartment is great. We splurged because it's a layover day.

Algoma, WI - Harbor Inn - $88. plus tax. two queens. We were in the older building. Fridge/microwave. Good wi-fi. Bathroom a little dated and the tile  not clean in the corners. New shower. Room enough for the bikes. Close to downtown.

Our previous choice was the River Hill $95. outskirts of town. Fancier looking in the photos. Andersons' stayed there and said their Bike Fridays hardly fit in the room. They next stayed at the Harbor Inn. We switched locations based on that advice.

Cleveland, WI - Highland Lodge $125. suite. It was only $20. more to get a suite than a room - but it was on the second floor. In either case, bikes went in the garage. Elle gave us a ride to the restaurant for dinner - how's that for service. She purchased the lodge ~5 years ago and has been restoring it. AD had stayed there right when she bought it and says Elle has done an impressive job.  These were the thickest towels of the trip. Netflix on the TV (Jacinto was so happy). Leather furniture in the living room. This was one of our favorite stays of the trip, price for quality.

Grafton, WI - Comfort Inn - points - right off of the interstate with plenty of big box stores around. Usual amenities. Cold breakfast. King bed.
