Day 39: Valentine to Bassett

Today started out very overcast but humid.  We climbed out of the creek canyon and as we road to the local grocery store it started to rain, but stopped and became a lite drizzle most of the morning. We were on the Cowboy Trail all day. It’s a well groomed rail trail with just a bit of fine loose gravel here and there. We stopped at several small towns for breaks and lunch. These towns were very bustling at the height of the railroads, but most are nearly ghost towns today. Bassett was our final destination and we road through town, we spotted the Corral Bar and stopped in for a couple of beers and some jalapeño poppers. We made camp in the city park/Rock County Fairgrounds and had teriyaki noodles with bacon flavored Spam. As we were cooking, dark clouds came in with continuous thunder and light rain… a harbinger of things to come?

marilyn swettMy husband enjoyed this picture. His grandmother was post master in Wood Lake - the 2-story brick building was the post office and his grandparents lived on the second floor. The brick building to the right was the library. His grandfather was a barber whose shop was at the other of town. As a child, my husband spent many happy days here in Wood Lake.
