Day 24: Mammoth Hot Springs - Rest Day

Today we took a day off to explore Mammoth Hot Springs. We started with breakfast in camp and shifted campsites from #7 to #5. From our campsite, it was about a mile walk up through sage and juniper to the visitors center. We explored the exhibits and then walked the grounds of Fort Yellowstone.   Lunch was a little early, bison bratwurst and a beer, at the local grill. It was fairly busy at the hot springs, but the elevated walkways got you very close to the travertine formations and water pools. It was about 4 miles of trails.  At times there were strong odors of sulfur and it was interesting to see how the flows shifted over time to consume anything their path. The colors from the bacteria ranged from blue to yellow to orange and brown.   Lots of prairie dogs in the area, black tail dear, and a small herd of female elk. We took an afternoon beer break in the hotel lounge and had a trout dinner at the dining hall.
