Day 19: Stoney Creek Campground to Butte
Well, the mosquitoes weren’t as bad this morning as they were last night. After a quick morning oatmeal, we broke camp and finished up the rest of the Rock Creek ride. Leaving the beautiful river and valley behind, the terrain transitioned to more open grass lands. We conquered to large climbs today as we rode over the John Long Mountains, and sailed into the valley below. The came an even steeper climb over the Flint Creek Range to Georgetown Lake. During one of breaks climbing to the pass, a lady (Robin) stopped her car to chat and cheer us on. After the pass, it was mostly down hill to Anaconda. We stopped for lunch the Spring Hill campsite for some cold fresh spring water, lunch and to meet up with Matt. My wife and I hosted Matt as a Warmshowers guest back in May. He is riding east bound from Washington DC to La Push, WA. We chatted for an hour about the trails, routes, people we’ve met and different experiences on our rides. Our afternoon break was beer and nachos in the town of Anaconda. Of note in the town is the remaining tower from the smelting furnace. Currently, it is the world’s tallest freestanding brick structure at 580 feet. As we entered Butte, we stopped at a grocery store for supplies and arrived at our Warmshowers host where enjoyed a delicious elk steak dinner with potatoes and red wine - thanks Nick.
