Beginning
Hello, My name is Brent Devitt. I’m newly retired from a career in education and retreat center ministry. I’m also an amateur adventurer on a three wheeled recumbent trike. I recently culminated 10 years and 13 stages to cross the U.S. from the east (West Quoddy, Maine) to the west (La Push, Washington.) I am now the new steward of one of the two Green Journey solar assisted trikes that crossed America in 2024 by Megan Routbort & Thomas Polo.
Plans are developing for my own Green Journey - A Pilgrimage of Hope for Creation from the northernmost tip of the contiguous 50 states (Angle Inlet, Minnesota) to the southernmost point, Key West Florida. The pilgrimage may total upwards of 3,500 miles over 75 days from Sept. 1 to mid Nov., 2025. The journey will pause in Ohio between Oct. 1-4 for the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, before heading further south. The mission is to experience earth friendly, sustainable travel, visit sites along the way involved in sustainability and care for the earth and find reasons for hope for our planet along the journey.
During this Jubilee year of Hope in 2025 Catholic communities across the United States are coming together to organize local Catholic pilgrimages—including Laudato Si’ pilgrimages, Jubilee pilgrimages, and Jubilee of Hope pilgrimages—as sacred opportunities to pray for the grace to encounter Christ in Creation and renew our relationships with God, the Earth, and one another. This Green Journey is one of those pilgrimages of hope for creation during the Season of Creation—September 1-October 4.
One of my hopes is to be the first cyclist to go “Buoy to Buoy” in the US. I’ve drawn inspiration from adventure hiker, Richard Larson, aka "Skittles" and a kayaker by the trail name “Out of Order” who have in recent years completed what is known as the Snowbird Route. There may be the opportunity for a second mate(s) to join this journey. Plans for creating a second solar trike are taking shape, such that other pilgrims may join in relay fashion along the route. The invitation is open for other adventurous souls to join the pilgrimage with or without solar powered pedal assist. Daily mileage will be from 50-70 miles. Accommodations along the route will be anything from camping, “warm showers” hosts, hostels, hotels, private residences.
