Packing list

As far as I can recall, I have never published a detailed equipment list.  We’ve known what we were about for so long that we don’t give it all that much thought, other than to maintain a checkoff list to help us forget something in packing (like this helps - we always forget something in packing).  Other bike journalists frequently do post what they’re hauling along from time to time though, so perhaps there’s some interest.

I’ll do it just this once, so don’t ask again.  It’s a good time for it, because we’ve been particularly meticulous in our packing this time and I’ve got a good, up to date record.  We’re taking more care because our lives have been in such disarray, shuffling things back and forth between the storage unit and wherever we’re living for the moment.  It wouldn’t take much of a slip up to arrive at the airport without passports, or in Greece without the mount for Rachael’s GoPro.  Rachael would surely kill me if I forgot her GoPro mount again.

So, here goes.  And don’t ask me how much all this weighs.  Not much - my arthritic knees are getting too old to subject them to much discretionary weight.

Bicycles

  • 2 matching bicycles: Bike Friday New World Tourists with the same configuration: disc brakes, Shimano 105 wx11 drive train, drop handlebars.
  • Bike accessories: Rear racks and rack straps, 2 frame pumps, 2 each water bottles and cages, matching (except for color) Lone Peak Mount Superior rear panniers with rain covers, rack underbags

Electronics

  • 2 iPads, 2 Samsung 8 phones, 2 Garmin 62S GPS units, night lights, Panasonic LX7 camera, Panasonic ZS70 superzoom camera, GoPro,  current outlet adapters.
  • A bazillion chargers, spare batteries, and mounts for the above.

Tools

  • 3 spare tubes, tire levers (Pedros), patch kit, spoke wrench, chain tool, multipurpose tool (Allen wrenches, etc), small crescent wrench, small needle nosed pliers, spare nuts and bolts.

Toiletries/incidentals

  • Razor and blades; toothbrushes, paste and floss; meds; sewing and first aid kits; sunscreen; backup eye glasses; lens cleaner; passports; credit cards; social cards; zip ties, rubber bands and plastic bags; nail clippers; laundry detergent; day pack

Scott’s clothing

  • Bike clothing: 3 bike shirts, 2 bike shorts, 2 pair of socks, bike shoes, long sleeved jersey, long cycling pants, rain boots, helmets
  • Street clothing: walking shorts, long nylon pants, belt, 2 t-shirts, 1 buttondown shirt, rain jacket, sandals, hat, 6 pair of underwear, swimming trunks.

Rachael’s clothing

Darned if I know.  She keeps her own list somewhere; and she’s tired enough that it doesn’t seem wise to interrogate her.

Left luggage (Stuff we take on the flight but leave at the hotel or ship ahead)

  • 2 Samsonite suitcases, plus packing materials
  • Pedal wrench, grease, clothing and reading materials for the flight, neck pillow, a 2nd rucksack for extra carrying capacity on the plane.

Seems like enough for life on the road, as long as everything gets there intact.

We’re ready!
