John's Bike

When John stopped for lunch at a restaurant in Madison FL today, he dismounted by uncleating from both pedals and straddling the bike. That put enough of his body weight on the carbon-fiber top tube to crack it. At Rick's suggestion, John (a physician) treated the top tube as if it were a broken bone. Using two strips of metal, epoxy glue, and tape from a nearby hardware store, he created a splint on the top and bottom of the tube. He then rode the bike for the remaining 30 miles of the route. He plans to also ride it until the trip ends in 3 days, then have it shipped home for a carbon-fiber specialist to evaluate. Here's a photo of the bike with the splint.

Karen ZattHope John's cracked carbon fiber bike can be fixed. When that happened to one of Scott's bikes, he put it on a trainer and now just uses it as a stationery exercise bike.
