Indoor and outdoor lodging info.

Indoor:

Rifle - LaQuinta $140., Comfort Inn $90., and Hampton Inn are all new and are across the bridge over by WalMart.

Meeker - Elk Mountain Inn - center of town - 970-878-3656 Jamie no breakfast included. restaurant on site. $70.46 includes tax.

Side note - there are several choices in Meeker, if you’d like to look around. there is the historic Meeker Motel $86.- Teddy Roosevelt stayed here. Rooms are upstairs. It would be worth a side trip just to look at the lobby.

Maybell - Victory Motel - 970-272-3773 Woody $70. rooms upstairs. This is a former stage stop. Teddy Roosevelt also stayed here. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid stayed several times. Bikes go on enclosed porch in the back. The only restaurant in town is currently closed. If it is still closed in June, Woody can make us dinner. We are supposed to check back in May about food. He thinks it will be open by then.

Hayden - Hiway 40 Lodge - $85. for a studio with a murphy bed. website reservation. 970-276-4200 They have only 3 rooms and we took one. Hayden is a very one horse town. Craig to the west is large with choices. Steamboat to the east is large/tourist town w/choices.

When Marty and Steve decided to join the motel version rather than the camping version, we ran into a bottle neck here in Hayden. We had taken all three rooms at the Hiway 40 Lodge. Marty was resourceful and looked at the city website, thus finding the Midway Boarding House above the White House Pizza. $60. a room, with bathrooms down the hall. Excellent research, Marty!

Yampa- Van Camp Cabins $68.90 includes tax Susan 970-846-5194 winter cell phone for reservations. Lovingly restored 1800’s cabins. Central bathhouse. No private bathrooms. No camping (I thought there might be since they have a bath house). I found this on a blogpost from a woman counting birds for the BLM. She was glowing. There is also a motel in town that has not so good reviews.

Kremmling - Hotel Eastin -Walt - 866-546-0815 has anything from $20. hostel beds to $125. for a large suite. We went for a private room with private bath for $65. Rooms are either in the basement (hostel) or 2nd floor. Bicycles go in garage. We will always have access. This is a historic hotel. Zane Gray stayed here while he wrote a book. It is being restored as we speak. At the moment they are working on the hostel rooms. trip advisor reviews are glowing. There are quite a few choices in Kremmling, including a Super 8. I thought this place sounded appropriately historic for a Colorado tour. I also like the price over the Super 8 at $93.

Eagle - tourist town - tourist prices - I had the Best Western at $119. including tax, but the price shot up since my original research to $147. I tried calling the motel and sweet talking the desk clerk. No go.

The Hitching Post B&B has just two rooms and sounds nice. $99. or $109. for the rooms. Sounds like a good breakfast. We aren’t really B&B people.

We ended up at the Hawthorne (big chain motel)- calling the front desk got me a slight savings over the website. 970-328-3000 Sabrina $108. AARP rate/not including tax. hot breakfast (make your own waffles sort of breakfast). Biscuits and gravy on Saturday - lucky us. I also checked airbandb.com, but didn’t find anything too interesting.

Overall I was very pleased with the prices. All are mom and pop places except Eagle.

Outdoor:

Rifle - Rifle Gap state park $18. per site, coin showers.

Meeker - three campgrounds, only one takes tents. Rim Rock Campground 970-878-4486 - I wrote and asked the price, no reply yet. Facitiies look nice, this used to be a KOA. It’s a couple of miles before town.

Maybell- Camping in the city park with showers. I’ve asked Larry (whom the info came from) if you need to check in with police and cost on the showers.

Hayden - Yampa River State Park $10.per site, coin showers. Slightly before town.

Yampa- I did not come up with any close to town camping - http://chasingbirds.org/2014/06/28/the-cost-of-a-just-okay-day/ The Van Camp Cabins in this blog post are where I would like to stay. Since they have a bath house, perhaps they would allow tent camping? If not, the cabins are reasonable.

Eagle - There is camping in Wolcott and Gypsum, but not Eagle proper. No surprise, since it’s close to Vail. I was wondering if we would be interested in sharing a condo? It would be cheaper if we all committed in advance.
