Day 4: In Annecy

Ride to the east with Janos

While Susan and Scott ride a more ambitious route today, Janos and I laze around until about eleven and then set out on a shorter route by Janos with less climbing than the one designed by Scott. The ride out of Annecy to the north is a bike route on the map, but one of those routes in cities that involves curbs and sidewalks, sharing the road on narrow bikes lanes and we even ended up in parking garage at one point, but we found our way out. All this effort to then land on a scenic bike route that had so much traffic that we were paying more attention to the road than the surroundings. It wasn't dangerous, just not pleasant.

It doesn't look bad, but the traffic was fast and plentiful and at this pull off, this is about the only picture I took on this part of the ride.

To our great relief after 15 kilometers with cars whizzing by we turned off onto a peaceful country road. Although there was still some light traffic, it felt like heaven. We dawdled and took pictures and were soon heading back, following the bike path along the lake that we had ridden yesterday. It being a Saturday, there were many more cyclists out today, and we rode cautiously among the many roadies riding two abreast (pet peeve), families with young children, tourists on rentals.

This is not a route I would necessarily recommend, but I guess you already gathered that. It was a good outing for us anyway. The sun was shining and we  were out on our bikes. Before going up to our room, we stopped for a quick bite to eat at a kebab place around the corner.

Before I finish up the day, let's have a look at Janos's video.

Then came the exciting part of the day, but not exciting in a good way. Getting ready to meet Rachael, Scott and Susan for dinner, I was packing the usual things in my rucksack - reading glasses, phone, and wallet. But I couldn't find my wallet. We searched high and low and it was nowhere. Don't let this be true I was thinking, but it was. It was gone,  either lost or stolen, who knows.  I think I had it with me in my cargo bag on my rear rack on our ride, but I am not sure. First we notified Susan and the Andersons not to wait for us but to go ahead and eat. Next I canceled my credit cards. Along with my credit cards was my identity card and cash.

It was too late to go to the police station to report possible theft, so we walked to the restaurant Susan had picked out for us. Those sweet people hadn't eaten yet, they waited for us! After getting over my anger with myself for letting something like this happen, I enjoyed the the truly memorable meal, and the pavlova for dessert was especially fantastic.

Nancy GrahamOh Suzanne, I am so very sorry about your wallet experience. I have this fear all the time when I go out. I really really should (and have not yet) have a “second” wallet with minimal things in it, including an expired drivers license and one credit card, to use on my daily bike rides. Your dilemma is a prompt for me to do that.

Otherwise, I love your photos and your bike ride stories. Stay well.

Suzanne GibsonTo Nancy GrahamA second wallet is a good idea, I think I'll have to do that, too. At least I have my phone, even more important than the wallet these days. And of course I have Janos as a back up.

Karen PoretDearest Suzanne,
Because of your very upsetting event, I only have my passport, and one EU credit card on me this time around.
Problem this morning was I forgot I don’t have a wallet this trip!
Praying the police can assist 👮‍♀️😇
