Day 12: In Pont-en-Royans

Sunday

It is not inconsequential that today was a Sunday in the Vercors, a region popular with hikers, cyclists and above all groups of motorcyclists, the latter enjoying the thrill of curvy mountain roads. Janos and I decided to take a day off our bikes and just wander about in the vicinity with our cameras.

First a bit of background on the town:

"What led people to settle in this isolated region and on these high-perched places? Water, the primary source of life, was the reason for their arrival: its flow enabled the transport of heavy logs from the forests above, while the obstacle it presented made the village a strategic location. On the banks of the river, up to seven mills harnessed its hydraulic power to grind flour and nuts or press fruit. By the nineteenth century, this same power was used to produce electricity."

Across from our hotel and on the other side of the river is a charming park, on this sunny Sunday filled with picnicking families and children having a great time in the little cascade.

Water is central to the village. Our hotel, Hôtel du Musée de l'Eau, is located next (or attached) to the Water Museum and the water theme is evident throughout with emphasis on bio-diversity. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures of the dining room walls. They are covered with French cartoons focused on environmental problems such as plastic pollution, the depletion of natural resources, global warming and nuclear waste. Not that I don't care about the environment, but some of the cartoons were kind of unappetizing for a culinary venue. However, the "water bar" was very nice.
