Day 1: Gauting - Rastatt

We're on our way

Finally the departure day has rolled around. I was in my usual stupor in the days prior to leaving and was happy to have all my chores done and be sitting in the car. The weather was perfect, sunny and not too hot. We almost forgot our water bottles, but a quick jog back to our apartment and they were also stowed in the car. We patted ourselves on the back for not forgetting anything and were off at ten o'clock sharp.

Nancy GrahamI would not hear very much if I did not have my hearing aids in working condition. I too forgot my charger on a camping trip not long ago, and did not realize it until that night when I was going to plug them in. My saving grace is that Susan uses same hearing aids and charger — and she had remembered hers!

After 45 minutes into the ride, I don't know what jogged my memory but I suddenly realized I had forgotten something crucial, the charger for my hearing aids. So back we went. That added a good two hours on the road. And that's not the first time I have done that. The other time we were too far from home to turn back. My solution was to ration the batteries by just using one ear for three hours at dinner. You would think I would have learned my lesson.

So now we were on the road again at twelve o'clock sharp. The drive went smoothly, occasionally the traffic was congested, but that is to be expected. Although Janos is an excellent driver I am still very tense in fast traffic. And now I have found a remedy that keeps me relaxed and makes the time go faster. I crochet. A granny square blanket is in the making and it keeps my focus off the road. Not that I needed another blanket, nor is it going to be very beautiful but it is providing me with the best therapy.

The squares are a bit wonky but it will be a colorful blanket when I have 100 of them sewn together.

Suzanne GibsonTo Graham FinchThanks! I think the variegated yarn is giving them a very asymmetrical touch. Not sure it was the best choice.

Nancy GrahamI like the colors — and I love that they are “wonky” squares.

We arrived in Rastatt around four. Susan and I started our Schwarzwald tour here two years ago. It is a pleasant town with an impressive palace that we won't explore this time around. We sat outside in the garden of the Braustübl for dinner and it was lovely.

Can you see the six pointed brewers star over the door? It is identical to the Jewish star of David and has its roots in alchemy.
