1. Getting to Portland, OR: All car, All day

Positioning ourselves for the Northern Tier, we drove from near Bigfork, MT to Portland. Bikes on top, panniers tucked inside. Almost 10 hours of driving to return our son’s car to him. Mostly ho-hum except for the beauty of western Montana, Idaho, and the Columbia Valley. And of course, Portland is a unique American city filled with a spirit of community and wonderful places to eat. We plan to return for a more thorough exploration.

Amazing deli that - besides fabulous deli foods - offered one-of-a-kind gifts. Good thing the panniers were already full, or this could have diverted into an intense shopping expedition.
