The Ersatz Cowboy: Western Movie Hero

The Final Scenes and Bonus Material

The last scene ended with a shot of G-2 ridin' into Dodge lookin' for trouble.  But my cowboy movie ain't over yet.  We still had to ride all the way across town, via Wyatt Earp Boulevard.  We must have looked like a couple of rough & tough hombres, because not one yellow-bellied outlaw in the entire town had the guts to challenge us to a gunfight.  (Lucky for us.)

If you've ever parked your horseless carriage in a strange town for a couple of weeks while conductin' a loop tour, you know about the anxiety you feel when you get back.  It involves two questions.

  1. Will my car still be where I left it? Or will it have been towed, stolen or vandalized?
  2. Will the car start?

I'm happy to report that the car was still there, it was in the same condition in which I left it, and the engine fired up as if the battery was brand new, which it isn't.  I probably looked like a fool to anybody who saw me pump my fist over something as simple as pressing a button to start a car.

Proof that the beginning and ending of my cowboy movie were filmed in the "Cowboy Capital" of the world.

I was pretty tired, but I didn't bed down for the night in Dodge.  No, I wanted to get a head start on the final chapter of my Kansas adventure.  So I drove my wagon and its team of six cylinders for about 90 miles to the cowboy town of Great Bend.

Not surprisin'ly, none of them sodbusters in that town had the guts to call me out for a duel neither.  I don't blame 'em.  I sure wouldn't call out somebody as filthy, sweaty, and stinky as I was.

The only interestin' thing I saw on that stretch between Dodge City and Great Bend, was another entry into the "World's Smallest Church" competition.

It was pretty small.

Emily SharpThat would be a gift from god if you were riding through and a tornado was approaching....

I figured Great Bend would be a good stopping point before proceeding to my exciting finale in the big cowboy city of Topeka tomorrow.

When it comes to suspenseful movie makin', it all boils down to Hitchcock, Tarrantino, The Coen Brothers, DePalma, and ME as to who is ranked #1.  All I can tell you for now is that there will be some great cyclin' and those city slickers better not try to stop me.  I hope you will check in to see what happens.

Today's ride: 5 miles (8 km)
Total: 403 miles (649 km)

Emily SharpYay to a car that starts and is still there when you get back to it!
I'm thinking, in modern times, America would be one of the few places where you could still get in a gun-slinging duel. Well, America and maybe Liberia or Somalia. Glad all the baddies recognised your tough cowguy ways and offered no challenge (for some reason, the movie Back to the Future 3 comes to mind).
