How I change a flat

When touring, it is not a question "if" you will get a flat, but "how many" you will get.  The following images show my method of dealing with this problem.

The sections of the "jack" made of 3/4" paint grade birch plywood. With most of the mass/weight of each piece removed by having large windows, each piece is strong but light.

"Jack" positioned next to the bike.

For the rear wheel, the bike is situated on the "jack" with it placed more towards the rear of the under seat rack lower deck. For a flat on the front, the "jack" would be position towards the front of the lower deck to elevate the front wheel.

Then, the usual routine for removing the rear wheel. Crank the pedals and shift the rear derailleur to put the chain on the smallest cog, undo the quick release and "negotiate" the rear wheel out from the derailleur and roll it out from under the bike.

Re-installation after repair is reverse order.

The process takes about as long to do as to explain.
