So this is vexing.  We went out for a ride up in the west hills today, and I took the new camera along.  Here’s one of the images that showed up when I loaded them to the iPad:

same symptom, different camera.

Some conclusions:

1. It’s probably not a problem with the camera
2. Maybe I didn’t need a new camera after all.

Some possible causes:

1. Bad SD card
2. Bad SD card reader
3. Bad iPad
4. Bad luck.

So, we’re starting at the top.  I bought a new SD card, and we’ll see what happens.
