The Morning Report(s)

No, it's not that morning report, the one Bruce's father created and maintained after he retired from his career newspaper business.  He's shared many stories from his father's life, and at some point I want to set that all down someplace where I can go back and remind myself of another priceless, unique story.  I'm always flattered when Bruce comments that I remind me of his dad, who was clearly an exceptional man.

So my plan is to place it in one of our first two Appendices: The Lives of Others and Private Lives; and I invite him to write some of this down in his own words when he's facing a day too sloppy to spend in the garden and he's got no other plan for the day.  If that happens, I'll paste his words and photos into his box, much as we recorded Bruce and Andrea's road trip to bring the Raven and Roddy home in January.  The same idea exactly, but hopefully an improved structural design to improve readability.

Well, and the day pretty much always includes consulting Weather.com, even knowing that its reliably is deteriorating rapidly ever since the Doge Boys started offing most of the staff at NOAA.  Not too bright, when you think about it, young tech wizards.

No, I'm here primarily to talk about this The Morning Report, a regular weekday feature on Josh Marshall's Talking Points Memo.  This  version is a weekday feature on TPM, a daily political blog I began subscribing to years ago, and one that I highly recommend if you're a political junkie too.  Marshall's blog features an excellent thumbnail sketch of the day's news, and it's been part of my daily news feed ever since.

And then I move on to read the other daily blogs I subscribe to: Heather Cox Richardson, Paul Krugman, Jennifer Rubin, Bulwark, and one or two others.  Most of my mornings begin this way, with me catching up on the outrages of the previous day while I'm waiting for the prednisone to kick in and improve my vision after its effects from the previous daily dose have worn off.  Just a part of my daily routine now, especially now that I've slowed down and stabilized enough to keep focus.  And especially since we finally emerged victorious from the Apple Wars and I can read my own mail again.

And, of course, the morning routine also includes a quick check at Weather.com to see what it has to say about plans for the day.  It's better than nothing (or than a kick in the pants, Gramma W would have said), still worthwhile checking it out as long as you keep an open mind about it and don't expect it to be as dependable as it was even as recently as just a few months ago now that the Doge Boys have offed most of the staff at NOAA, to the point that some offices are so depleted that they can't even send up weather balloons any more.  Yes, this was definitely a brilliant idea, Elon.

George (Buddy) HallHeather Cox Richardson's daily summary is the first thing I read each morning as well. It's comprehensive enough that I try to force myself to not look at other news, but that's hard for me most of the time. The exception is when I'm on tour, and I don't read any news or watch any tv when on tour - it's really quite cleansing. Enjoying your narrative, best of luck
