Quite a few bits of the Mawson Trail are clay roads which become muddy and unrideable when wet. Some of these, including a 2km stretch north of Laura, get ruined when wet due to overuse by 4WD vehicles. When the track is dry, cyclists can extemporally choose the best of the worst parts of the track to ride along.

Gate with signage for 1.5km detour track to the King Tree, in the Wirrabara Conservation Park. The 'King Tree', perhaps 400 years old, is one of the only surviving very large trees from this area. During the pastoral period in the 19th century, much of the land was cleared for farming with wood used for housing and other purposes. The 'The King Tree' survived because at the time there were no saws large enough to fell it, and because later it received government protection.
